It can carry four passengers and fly up to 100 miles on a single charge.
Joby Aviation delivered the first electric air taxi to Edwards Air Force Base in California. The director of the Emerging Technologies Integrated Test Force at Edwards said they plan to use the new aircraft for day-to-day transporting, whether for spare parts, cargo, or passengers around the sprawling base.
The new vertical lift air taxi can carry 1,000 pounds of cargo or four passengers, and it can be flown remotely or by a single pilot in its cockpit. It is capable of flying up to 100 miles on a single charge at speeds of roughly 200 miles per hour.
The Air Force plans to conduct several months of remote piloting to assure safety.
The head of government affairs for Joby Aviation said, “We’re at a unique period of time. Electric aviation is going to be a powerful tool. We need to make sure that we understand it and make sure it evolves in a way that is conducive for the U.S.”
